passenger of an airplane? Read on to learn about your basic rights while flying from an
airport.
1. When your luggage is lost or delayed
The case where a passenger loss his luggage is very rare at the airport yet you have to
know your right if your luggage is damaged while transferring. If an airline permanently
loses or damages your bag, they are obliged to pay you for the depreciated value of
your belongings. If your luggage is delayed for an hour or two, you’ll have to wait around
until it arrives. You will be compensated for the wait time if your bag is delayed for a
whole day.
2. While purchasing a ticket
Passengers have a lot of rights which they are unaware of before actually stepping foot
on their plane. This also includes price guarantees when purchasing your ticket. By law,
you’re given 24 hours’ time after booking if you want to change or cancel a reservation
without financial penalty. Customers are also protected from an increase in fare after
purchasing a ticket. Once you pay for your ticket the airline has to honor that price and
can’t increase the cost of anything after the fact. The same condition also applies to
luggage fees, as well.
3. When your luggage is delayed
When an airline overbooks a flight and there aren’t sufficient seats for all of the
passengers, the Department of Transportation requires that the airline ask passengers
individually if anyone would be willing to voluntarily give up their seat in exchange for
compensation. If enough people volunteer, you’re in the clear. But even if you don’t
volunteer (and no one else does,) it is possible that you could STILL find yourself
bumped off of your flight, even if you are in desperate circumstances.
